Long lost dividends

My Mum acquired a small number of shares during one of the privatisations that happened in the 1980s. Due to an admin error at the company concerned, the address stored against this shareholding has been wrong since that day to this. Consequently, Mum has never received any dividend payments due. And she's never questioned this, till this day.
On Mum's behalf, I have been in contact with the registrar for the company involved, who have provided me with a list of all the dividends payable on the shareholding since mid-2000.
I have asked them to provide me with a statement of dividends payable from the date she acquired these shares in the 1980s till mid-2000, but they seem to have ignored this part of my request so far. That is they haven't said they will do it, but they haven't said they wont. They just haven't done it.
What's the legal position? Can my Mum insist they pay her the lost dividends from the 1980s to 2000? Or can the company effectively say "no, due to the time that's passed you've lost them"?
