have you not got a hot water tank with an electrical immersion heater
  • Errmm We have a boiler in the loft with a switch below it we have turned the switch on which i would pressume is the emersion heater but no hot water

My Theory is i may not have hot water because we need gas to heat up the emersion heater the emersion heater turns on but cos of no gas then no hot water

British Gas are coming today to see how much pipe we need for our cooker and also to fit a proper gas meter cos we are not eligable for the token thingy they are charging us for this

Shouldnt the council of checked with us first what we need gas wise we are being charged £70 squid for the priviledge of having gas when it should of been done before we moved in RIP OFF MERCHANTS

Immersion Heaters are electric, not gas.

If you locate you hot water tank, you are looking to see if you can see somthing like this attached to it (You will only see the top part the rest is in the tank)

If you have then it will have a wire running from it either to a switch on the wall or to some kind of socket. Turn this on and the water should heat-up.

On the gas issue, it is very unusual for the gas provider to have cut-off the supply, this would only happen if they had unpaid accounts from the previous tenant.

Have you looked to see if the gas is turned on? - there should be a tap somewhere (maybe near your meter) - Of course, don't switch it on unless you are happy that you don't have a leak somewhere.

  • Thanks for that i will check when i get home i know from looking earlier there is a wire leading to a switch we did turn this on but not for long will leave it on for a while this time

Regarding the gas i have located the Box and turned on the gas there was a little burst of gas then it stopped (Ran Out). it is a Token meter which is getting removed tomoz maybe thats why no credit in meter no Gas

    Thanks for your help
i will be able to try when i get out of work

Hi, why dont you speak to your housing Officer about a rebate of your rent for the days you were without gas, you never know if you dont ask!

Did the Council say that mains gas was supplied to the property?

I would have thought that the Council would only provide the property and that utilities were down to the tenant. However, I would also expect the Council to specify those utilities that were connected.

I do agree with you but the problem i have is many people i know who have moved into a council house have been asked what their living conditions are whether they are working or not ect we was never asked they pressumed we would be on benefits so they put a token meter in which we was not allowed to use because we are not claiming apart form that they seemed to make sure everything was ok

i may complain but theres not much i can say really
