Making sprung slats suitable for a pocket spring mattress

Our new mattress arrived today - it was so comfortable in the shop but feels a lot firmer at home and I'm a bit worried that it's going to exacerbate my joint pain. After a bit of research, I suspect this is because it was on a sprung divan in the showroom and we have it on a solid slatted base (with very narrow gaps between the slats.)

I really don't want to change our bedstead, so I was thinking of getting some sprung slats to replace our solid slats, and using thin pegboard between the sprung slats and the mattress to support the pocket springs... any idea if this will work, or is even a good idea?? All advice/info welcome!

I'm afraid I don't think that you can replicated the comfort of a divan set with a bedstead. Sorry.

It's best not to use a pocket sprung mattress directly on a pine or metal bedstead as the spacing between the slats may distort the pocket springs as they tend to compress between the slats, not only reducing the support they can give but also giving a "railway track" effect when you turn the mattress over.

The last independent specialist bed store we used specifically recommended that we added a sheet of pegboard.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Thanks for the replies guys :) I'm not trying to replicate a sprung divan as such, it's more trying to soften the feel of our new mattress a bit. I know that we (sadly) won't be able to get it to feel the same as it did in the store. I am cross that no-one bothered to tell us that that type of base the mattress is on would affect the feel of it

The gaps we have between the slats are about 1cm - we put the slats from our old bed in-between the new ones (trying to save a bit of money!), we've left small gaps to allow air to circulate a bit. I really just need to know whether pegboard will bend enough on sprung slats to allow the sprung effect to be felt, whilst supporting the mattress properly, or if it's just a really stupid idea :rotfl:

A 1cm (1/2") gap should be narrow enough for the springs not to notice.

Therefore, I'd say that, whilst pegboard isn't a stupid idea, it's a waste of money.
