Calling from abroad

Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked many times before, but I couldn't get my search to return anything useful.

I am off to Canada/USA next week and want a way to phone home. I have noticed that most of our hotels offer free 'toll free' calls. Is there a provider who offers toll free access numbers from North America?

I have found a couple, but they look very amateur-ish and aren't based in the UK (since I'm giving them my credit card details, I'd prefer a well known or recommended supplier).

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Al

I had a bit more of a search and found this thread:

This recommended a site called cloncom.com and I found a calling card on there with a toll free number and rates of 1.52p a minute!

If anyone knows a 'subscription' service rather than a prepaid service which gives similar rates, I'd be very interested.

For standard telephony, getting 'home' to phone you in Canada or the USA will always be cheaper - the MSE International Callchecker list a number of providers offering ½p and 1p per minute rates dialling in that direction.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

marble, maybe this might be of interest:

You can rent a US toll-free number from $2 per month, then you can dial that number and make calls through it (6.9 cents per min to the UK, apparently). People can also dial your number and leave you voicemail messages.

I haven't used this service, but I do use their sister service called faxaway.com and I've not had any problems.
