Doesn't 42 years of contributions qualify you for everything you may need? If not, then we're all doomed! :(

Not sure what benefits you're talking about but with the lump sum I will have plus savings I doubt I will qualify for anything other than the state pension, winter fuel allowance and maybe a bus pass!

National Insurance contributions count towards the following state benefits:
    • the basic State Pension
    • the additional State Pension, sometimes called the State Second Pension
    • Jobseeker's Allowance - the 'contribution-based' element
    • Employment and Support Allowance - the 'contribution-based' element
    • Maternity Allowance
    • bereavement benefits - Bereavement Allowance, Bereavement Payment and Widowed Parent's Allowance
    • Incapacity Benefit
You can find out more about each of the above benefits on the GOV.UK website, including how to claim.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Contributary benefits, such as JSA and ESA, are based on how many NI contributions have been made in the past 2 full tax years, they take no account of how many years contributions you have made before that.

I'm not sure if you have read this thread from the start but as I am retiring this month and will pick up a generous pension I don't envisage claiming JSA or whatever ESA is.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

Thanks for posting all that but the only one I will be claiming is the basic state pension in 2016.

I think that wraps this discussion up. Thanks everyone.
