Lucky Dip!!!

Do you ever stick things in the freezer thinking "I'll remember what that is" and "it's easily recognisable anyway", so you don't bother labelling it, only to find a few weeks later you've completely forgotten what it was, not to mention a multitude of similar looking/packaged meals have since been shoved in there

I've just pulled out a green package, obviously some sort of soup, but I have no idea what it is :rotfl: ... will find out once it's re-heated ;)

What's more disconcerting is that I have some orange soups in there but they look exactly the same colour as my base curry sauce mixes

So, who here labels stuff and what's the best method of doing it as I need to sort out a proper system. I've got a load of stewing steak and mince to make into various dishes which will be nigh on impossible to differentiate by sight once cooked and frozen

I've not done that with freezer stuff - but I have three pots of seeds growing on my window sill that I have NO idea what they are - I have a horrible feeling one of them might be pumpkin (dont ask) and I have no garden - i'm imagining having to re-pot it in my green recycling bin soon, that wont impress the council - hee hee!

    - you could write on the freezer stuff with indelible pen? or nail varnish (then after its defrosted you can remove the nail varnish with remover and it doesnt have to ruin your plastics)...

Most of my stuff is frozen in freezer bags. For soups, stews, sauces etc I place the bag inside a plastic chinese take-away carton to hold the shape, then remove the carton once it's frozen. So I have several blocks of similar looking frozen food with no labels!!!

I remember years ago buying coloured stickers but these always seemed to fall off in the freezer anyway so was a waste of time

I had exactly this dilemma this morning. I have about 3 portions of soup & 3 portions of gravy in the freezer & I wanted soup to bring to work for lunch. I *think* I picked the right one..........
I use plastic chinese/indian takeaway containers to freeze portions of whatever, but rarely mark them with their contents.

I use an overhead projector pen - permanent - or a little sticker as i too have had too many experiences of 'whats that lurking in the freezer...'
You could use a colour code system if you had different colour lids for meat, veg, fish etc... or only have stock frozen in jugs, soup in boxes and so on.

I keep a thick, black, permanent marker in the box of freezer bags next to a box of white sticky labels for labelling plastic boxes. It seems to work and nobody's nicked my pen yet.

That's actually very organised by my standards

OK, I'm going to sound terribly anal .... I label EVERYTHING before I put it in the freezer. I buy the cheap freezer labels from Lakeland and use a permanent pen. Also, the freezer is organised so certain things go in certain shelves e.g. ice cream & puds/sweets in drawer 1, bread & pasta in drawer 2, cuts of meat in drawer 3, bacon, sos & other meat products in drawer 5, fish in drawer 6 and veg in drawer 7.

And then I have a list of the contents of the freezer on my PC, so I can see what's in there without having to endure frost-bite!

I also have a rule in the house - if anyone (i.e. my partner!) puts anything in the freezer with no label, they have to use the unidentifiable contents to make a meal ;)
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
