FIRE! Help needed!

Hi

Today i have been doing a bit of spring cleaning, pulled the dryer out to give it a sweep behind and the pipe that takes away the hot air dislodged. I put it back in and happily continued cleaning.

This evening i put the dryer on, came back 20 minutes later to a kitchen full of black smoke. I unplugged the dryed and opened all the windows immediately but my flat now stinks of smoke! My landord is comming round to view the flat sometime this week and i need to get rid of the smell of smoke quick! Anyone got any ideas how i can do this?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

I would think that the best idea is to keep the windows open as much as you can, let the fresh air through the flat, you can always light a fragrance burner when you know when landlord is about to call.

Think I'd be more concerned as to why and where the smoke came from in the first place.

Cheers pal ... I've currently got my air purifier going in the kitchen with a load of peach oil to make it smell nice ... and that doesn't seem to be doing too badly ... but I want something that is fool proof ... I'm sure fresh air will work eventually but time isn't really on my side ...

My dad has suggested San Izol but a quick scan of the interweb doesn't bring up anything that suggests it is still available ... or where to get it from ... though he said Jeyes would do a decent enough job ... it just isn't as good as Izol ...

His other genius suggestion (quite a rarity when it comes to my father) was to treat myself to a coffee machine and put a pot on as he's about to come round which will mask the smell ... or ... buy a cheap one ... and let it intentionally burn the day before ... that way ... any smoky smells can be attributed to that ...

Or ... incense ... (my own stroke of genius) ... intentionally smoky ... but ... nice smelling ...

Slightly worried he's going to think we've got something to hide ... ha ha ...

    *polishes halo*

I'm fairly certain the reason for all the smoke was because we didn't reattach the pipe that takes the hot air away properly ... and it would have overheated and perhaps cought with all the dust and such that you associate with clothes drying and under counters and the like ...

Needless to say ... I'm not going to be using it again ... and I shan't be bringing it to landlord's attention ... but I have rigged up a washing line on my balcony :D

Any other suggestions gratefully received :)

I'd go for the "I'm glad you come round today , that dryer nearly caught fire last night !! "

:rotfl: ... I've already got that one lined up for something else ... I pulled the string on the bathroom light with a bit too much vigour the other day and the mechanism inside popped ... not a big deal because it's only a small bathroom and the landing light/window provides more than enough light to see in the dark ...

Had to dig out my wind up torch over the weekend because we had visitors staying over and couldn't really pee with the door open late at night :rotfl:
  • Hi,

sounds like a kinda wacky place you live in,:rotfl:

I would say to your landlord about what had happened, you don't need to say about putting the hose on wrongly, though I doubt that would be the cause of the smoke, even with hose not on properly you would've got steam.

Just say that the last time you used it, it started belching out smoke, and that it was a good job you were in the kitchen/wherever, at the time, or things could've been a lot worse, and mention the pull cord as well, and anything else, it's what you are paying rent for.

A similar thing happened in my old house when my girlfirend set the kitchen on fire. We got rid o the smell by using one of those oudor nutralising air fresheners (Oust) and we left all the windows and doors open. The smell was gone in about a day.

If you mask the smell and nothing is said fine - but as you say you won't be using the dryer again - so you move out, new tenant moves in - uses dryer - burns place down - you have to bring it to landlord's attention - you don't need to say a word about the moving etc - just the smoke
