HELP!! My dishwasher has a life of it's own!!

I'm hoping somebody can help me, but I'm not sure if this post is in the right place!! My son kindly loaded our dishwasher after sunday lunch, and thoughtfully put some washing up liquid in with the load!!!?? Now after about three hours of trying to stop the foaming, and cleaning up the bubbly mess, the dishwasher just won't stop the cycle. It has been on now for a total of about eight hours, and that was meant to be the quick wash, which only takes about 20mins normally!! Can anybody offer suggestions as to how I might fix the problem, without having to call in an expensive service engineer???

PLEASE please help!!

It is probably the pump running because it 'knows' that the machine is not empty.

I would just unplug it from the electricity and leave it overnight until the bubbles have gone.

    Hi Contemplates,

The article from this link will help I hope, just follow the bit near the end.

If it's any consolation hundreds of people do this every year and, even for teh engineer, they can be an absolute nightmare to put right after this. :(

Thanks for the replies guys, but I've basically had it on since midday today, and thankfully all of the foam has gone now, but it is just constantly running the cold cycle, and the machine itself won't stop the cycle STILL!!! I'm tearing my hair out now. KWatt, I would post on the UK Whitegoods website, but they state u MUST have a make and model no, but all I can find is a lot of numbers and the name General Domestic Appliances Ltd!! Where to now??!

    No worries.

If you look on the left hand side of the door when it's open you should see a rating plate there. On that should be the model, serial etc.

The reason that they all ask for that is that they're all different from range to range, even the same brand. So, to give the best advice we really need that.

It sounds as if it's a reset stat issue, they often trip when this happens but to be sure I'm steering you in the right direction I'd need to know what it is.

From GDA it's most likely a Hotpoint or Creda but they bought them in, largely from Bosch, before they were bought by Indesit in 2004/5. But if you can give me the numbers that are there then I can likely tell you what it is, or find out for you.

    Hope that helps.

OK, I've had a look where you suggested, and I've found the plate. It says:

    GDA type 3.M1.150213110100 BF41 97+G711589 2.06 11589 36MBHTGB2

    Thats pretty much it.

Thanks again for the help!! Much appreciated!

You're not gonna like this, but at least it's information...

The thermal will almost certainly have tripped.

Now, normally this wouldn't be a real problem, open it up, press the button and you're back in business.

    But...

This is actually a machine built by a company called Brandt, which is French and not exactly what I'd call customer friendly. In fact the opposite.

There are (on most) three thermostats in the door and another on the back of the sump which is a total pig to get at. To get at the ones in the door the door needs stripped down to check them. Getting to the one on the back of the sump is just an utterly, utterly horrid thing to be doing.

If you need more help just ask and I'll tell you as much as I can.

Ok, so I've managed to strip the door.....I'm guessing the three thermostats are circular with an electrical connection on either side, and are in contact with the metal inside of the door with some sort of white lubricant??
I have photos, but tried to attach but failed miserably!!

How do I check them? and where are the buttons that I should reset?

The button, if there as some have them, some don't dependent on build will be on the back of the thermostat. Usually though that would be on the one in teh base. :(

Those three control the temperature in the cavity normally.

They will usually be closed circuit on cold and open as the temperature rises.
