Is fibre broadband generally more reliable than ordinary DSL?

Hi folks,

I have been with talktalk for last few years and overall generally good service at a very low cost to me.

I'm using the

Huawei HG523a router and getting 3mbit download but down to 500 kbs during peak times.

Getting quite a few disconnections these last few days and a lot of broadband downtime.

As it comes back to normal at off peak hours can only put it down to a talktalk network problem.

My question is

1 If I were to sign up to the fibre to the cabinet with talktalk would it generally be more of a reliable service and with less of congestion during peak hours?

2 I know that when problems arise that Openreach engineers are supposed to treat all ISP's the same but I definitely think that maybe BT get some priority as looking at their service status page it is usually resolved within a day or so, but looking at talktalks it seems to take longer. Am I right or wrong in this?

At the moment I probably feel I will have to pull the plug with talktalk sooner or later. I am a member of their talktalk members page so may post on there if service continues to be less than satisfactory.

Thanks for any info.

John

In my experience, reliability is the same (and generally been excellent for me, with BT). I've never had more than a couple of minutes downtime.

Downtime usually is at ISP level - so fibre with talktalk would be the same as DSL with Talktalk. It's quite rare for it to be an issue at the exchange.

    Hi John,

If you are experiencing service problems then it would be beneficial to post on the TalkTalk Members Forum.

No idea for Talktalk. But from my past experience Virgin fibre optic > BT infinity > BT total BB

I have had both and Cable or Fibre optic is so much better.

Never had one problem with Virgin media broadband, always up always quick and always reliable, I would hate to live in an area not supported by cable.

The first rule of Talk Talk is that you don't discuss Talk Talk.
The second rule of Talk Talk is that you don't discuss Talk Talk.:D

I'll get me coat, actually the above is good advise..

FTTC would not cure any network related problems as it is only an improved 'last mile connection' Reliability may be better as their will be less joints in your cable between you and the exchange.
The fttc infrastrusture is the same for all the isp.
A lot of folks problems are down to their internal wiring / wireless interference.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
