Keep an eye out on Currys refurbs. We got a HP Pavilion g6-2210sa For £299 inc delivery at weekend, other than the box it was brand new. Cheaper in red for some reason.

Decent spec too for the price

    15.6"
    i5-3210M processor
    6 GB
    1 TB hd

Only weak point is the relatively low res screen.

    Usually appear every few days.

With £500 - 600, you can go for intel i7

These two are the best spec I manage to find under £600

However, for your use, you can simply go for i7 or i5 machine with integrated GPU

What use is an i7 when he is just downloading the odd movie?
If it's a Desktop replacement, he be dropping down to a relatively small and low resolution screen. An i7 processor won't help with that.
As above, if dropping down, he might as well just spend between £200 and £300 for a half decent laptop and get an extended warranty.

I am not saying he need a i7. I just inform him what is the best spec availible with his budget.

If you clicked on the last link, it is a toshiba i5 for £380 only.
Laptop direct sell that with £400, but they offer 3 year warranty for extra £40.

I understand. Debate is for the benefit of the OP. Personally, I would take the 'manufacturer' extended warranty, even if I had to pay a little more... or less.
