  • The scents of fabric conditioner can confuse butterflies into laying their eggs on the clothing, rather than on the food plant for their caterpillars.

So I don't use the stuff.

I use which ever washing powder is cheapest, and occasionally use a splash of brown vinegar and line dry as often as possible.

Washing clean, fresh, soft and smells of fresh air, and Cheap! very OS :)

I never use fabric softener in clothes washes, but do occasionally put a little vinegar in the fs drawer for towels as they sometimes go a bit hard when dry. I love the smell of fresh air-dried clothes, fs just spoils it.

    Can I ask a silly question...please don't laugh

What sort of vinegar are you all using, we only have malt vinegar in the cupboard which we add to chips!! Surely that's not what you use on clothes?? If so why? What does it do?

Not a silly question at all Bella. I buy white (clear) vinegar from my local farm shop, it's £3.99 for 5 litres which lasts me at least a year. It acts as a softener and doesn't leave a smell. I also use it for cleaning, and for putting on chips :D. I believe malt vinegar is just as good but not tried it myself.

I buy white vinegar from Mr A - 44p for a 500 ml bottle I think. It's distilled malt vinegar - clear rather than brown. I don't have any problems with smells. Not tried brown malt vinegar so I can't say if that works any differently.

It removes any build up from towels to make them fluffy and absorbent. ;)

you've got me curious now ! those who use vinegar do you just use a cap full in the "conditioner" compartment?

i usually buy smart price 66p for 1ltr but it is making a mess of my machine.
