Lawnmower Recommendations

Hello

It's that time of year again - sun is out, grass is long!

Normally I borrow my Mum's electric rotary mower but our front garden is 70ft long and the grass always seems to clog the blades up and it takes an age to cut.

The grass is mossy and a bit weedy, so basically we are just looking to cut it to make it look tidy, ie. we don't want a bowling green finish, just something that looks like we are making the effort, lol.

Would we be better with a petrol mower?

Any recommendations - don't really want to spend more than £100 - something that gets the job done quickly and not too heavy to move around.

thanks!

If you get a petrol lawn mower (and it won't be a high quality one for that money) think about the servicing costs...they are, after all, an internal combustion engine like your car. Ask a local repairer how much a service would be and how often it's needed.

70' isn't really that big for an electric lawn mower. If the rotary one you're using has trouble, maybe the blade needs sharpening (or replacing for £15) - go and compare your Mum's blade with a new one in B&Q - you might be surprised.

    IMHO I'd go electric.

A decent petrol mower, a contractors mower, honda or failing that a Hayter with a B&S Quantum engine, aluminium deck. Would tackle that easily. Makes electric mowers look like kids toys.

However at with that budget you're pretty much restricted to cheap electric mowers, Bosch Rotax are the best I've come across. Still won't match a petrol for performance though.

    I have a Hayter. It's awesome.
  • Kind of agree about the servicing - But it `s not so important on modern engines - using a good oil keeps the dirt in suspension , and the engines have solid state ignition . If you can find a mower with a Brigs and Stratton , or Honda engine - the rest of it`ll be fine . The fuel will go off over winter so run it out on the last cut of the year

Get the widest blade and largest grass box you can afford, it'll make it less work. I use a Rotak 43 on a 60 by 60 foot garden. I would not want to use a Rotak 32, too many grass box changes, too many passes.
