Switching from Meter to Bills - advice needed

GoodMorning
GoodMorning Posts: 6 Forumite
Can anyone give me any advice as currently my Mum has a pre payment meter for both gas and electric.

We want to put her on a bill for both instead paid monthly via DD but I do not understand how to find the best deal.

She is currently with Eon on the AgeUK tariff.

Any help with the best supplier to go to would be fab :)

TIA

Many suppliers will be reluctant as they will query the reasons for having a prepay meter installed in the first place - it usually means a previous difficulty in paying on time.

It will cost to swap out the meters and be prepared to pending a minimum of £100 to do this. The user will also be credit checked too.

Find out her typical annual usage. If she doesn't have the figures then she can telephone Eon - they will tell her these figures.

Whack those numbers with her postcode into a price comparison site (such as energyhelpline.co.uk or uswitch.com).

If you choose AgeUK and prepayment as your input tariff note that you may only get results for prepayment tariffs. As you want to see direct debit tariffs you may have to NOT choose prepayment but choose monthly direct debit as your CURRENT payment to see the range of direct debit results. In this case remember to IGNORE the 'savings' figure and just read the total annual costs and compare yourself with the previously determined prepayment costs.

E.On swap out prepayment meters for credit meters for free, according to this website.

As long as she'll pass a credit check she should be fine.

    Use a comparison site.

Input your mum's annual usage in kWh, but don't worry about the current supplier or tariff (choose any, as long as it is for a credit meter)

Ignore the savings (as it is based on an incorrect assumption of current supplier/tariff), just look for the cheapest annual cost :)
  • Thank you so much that is great advice. She has NEVER been on a bill system (changed to key from 50p meter lol) so should not be a problem. I will let you know how we do.

    Hi GoodMorning

Just to confirm what others have said, we no longer charge to replace a prepayment meter with a credit meter.

We will, though, carry out a credit check.

    Hope this helps.

Hi, is the smart meter will be installed as well for the new meter connection?
    Thanks.

    Hi nanzki

Smart meters are a bit different from prepayment meters.

Smart meters work in much the same way as conventional gas and electricity meters. The main difference is they can talk to each other, communicate with an energy display and send messages back to us.

At the moment, we're installing smart meters in selected properties around the UK to help us understand customer needs and what systems we need at our end.

If you wish, you can register an interest in smart meters at our website.

    Hope this is of interest.
