……..I think, but am not 100% sure that by law all insurance policies are supposed to cover you for 12 months in an EU country but with THIRD PARTY RISKS ONLY. Perhaps someone could check this out?.........

my understand is that, because of EU laws, if a car is legal in one country then it can be legally driven in any other EU country.

But, it only covers you for the minimum required in the other country which might even be less than the third party required in the UK so no fire or theft cover and no cover for damage to your car.

A “green card” will extend your normal cover abroad but are normally limited to 30 or 60 day in a year.

There are a couple of firms that will offer permanent green card (popular with squaddies based in Germany). I’ll ask and let you know
  • I am going to Hungary.

I got insurance with the camping club in the end. They seemed reasonably priced, were good on the phone and sent the docs very quickly indeed.

180 days cover in a year abroad, whcih should be enough. By that time I'm pretty sure I'll be fed up of 'driving backwards' anyway.
