When to expect deposit back?

Hi all,

I did the check-out of my previous rented house last Thursday with the landlord who said all was fine and would arrange for the full deposit to go back into my account. He looked a bit confused and said he would get the agent to arrange the payment back into my account, at which point I said I thought it was down to him. Not sure if this 'confusion' was an act on his part, he's been such an unreliable landlord but I wasn't going to moan at this point as I just wanted my deposit back.

He queried whether I had the same bank account as when I moved in. I confirmed that I did but that I would let him know the bank details for his reference. I took it as an opportunity to post him a letter (did this on the Saturday) confirming the check-out and that my bank details for the transfer of the full deposit were XXXX, just to cover my back.

I contacted the deposit scheme to ask within what time-frame landlords should return deposits and they said within 10 calendar days.

So if I haven't received anything from 10 calendar days after I sent the letter should I contact the deposit scheme people to raise a dispute or chase the landlord?

Thanks

Ultimately he is responsible for the return of your deposit, but it could be that the letting agency he's using have protected it on his behalf. Either way you as the tenant should get it back within the timescale given by the scheme. Does your prescribed information say anything about what to do if there is a delay? The scheme I'm using says the tenant can apply for release of the deposit if the LL doesn't.

Yes, the scheme said I should contact them if there's any delays so I will do that. I don't want to get into to'ing and fro'ing with the landlord and not getting anywhere lol. Thanks

    Which scheme is deposit with?

Have you checked the release process, as with some schemes you have to log in and release the deposit from your side too. Otherwise the LL could be releasing the money to anyone, so you have to confirm your details.

It's with mydeposits.co.uk, they didn't say anything to me about me releasing it from my side, they said the landlord would have to do it but to contact them if this didn't happen.

Perhaps I should ring them again to clarify.
