As a small child my parents went hungry to feed me, because money was tight.

My grandmother, now in her mid 80s, would go without rather than see any one of her 4 children, 6 grandchildren or great granddaughter go hungry.

There are days when DD eats loads, and others she barely eats anything. As I said, small children listen to their bodies and only eat as much as they need (generally). If DD doesn't want to eat at 9am but wants something at 10.30am, you think I should deny her, do you?

If she doesn't eat at 9am then surely she would have the food at 10:30 that she would have had or am I missing something here. ;)

The point is that there was enough to eat and if I chose not to eat it then I surely couldn't have been that hungry! As we all had the same food my parents going without would make no sense.

Would you like to eat cereal 1.5 hours after the milk got put on it?

If you were babysitting a small child, unexpectedly, and you had 1 portion of shepherd's pie and veg would you:

    a) eat it yourself and give the child nothing
    b) split the food between you, and not worry whether the child had had enough
    Or
    c) let the child eat as much as it wanted and eat whatever it left?

Just because that happened in your family it doesn't mean it happened in every family.
Things were very different years ago.

In which decades did children starve so their parents could eat?

Why would you put the milk on before ensuring the child wanted to eat?

Interesting scenario you put and if faced with that I would probably split it. However I think it strange that if someone needed me to babysit at short notice that they wouldn't supply food for the child.

I dont know how old you are but yeh we would have gone hungry till the next meal, not that I ever starved myself. Food wasnt as cheap as it is now, and clothes were very very dear. Snacks were unheard of unless you wanted an apple cos that and oranges were pretty much it, not like now where snack food is available for babies now!

    I'm 35.

You're telling me that as a 20 month old toddler (as pigpen has) you were regimented to 3 meals a day and nothing else?

Because I ask DD if she wants it, she says yes, so I make it and she changes her mind. 2 year olds often change their minds. ;)

    I don't know a single parent that would say B. without a doubt they'd all say C.

If it were an emergency, there may not be time to sort out food!

The thing is that you seem determined that the way I was brought up couldn't have happened and I can assure you it did.

There wasn't the luxury of changing your mind, if you asked for it then you got it.

I believe you completely, as a child of 5 upwards. I can't imagine that regime for an 18 month old non-vocal child (who couldn't ask).

Then the parent would be giving the child the appropriate food at the appropriate time. ;)
