Mornin,
A bit of advice please, just got a call this morning from a friend's partner in Portugal that he has had a heart attack followed by a stroke he's in hospital right now.
Not having had a passport for some years, is there anyway I could get an emergency passport so that I could fly out to see and help out?

Ring the passport office, rather than wait hours for replies on here.
You will wait just a couple of minutes. But I don't think there is such a thing as a temporary one if that is what youre asking. I think its a full one or none.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks, I don't mind which type they do, it's just a time thing!

I think technically (legally) you do t need a passport if you are an EU citizen, going to another EU country. HOWEVER, most airlines etc will ask for one and it is within their right to only accept passports as proof of EU citizenship etc.
I don't know if there is anyone who will accept driving licence (or like) as proof, but they could. (I would have thought more flexibility with ferries etc). If you can't get a passport in time it might be worth checking aroun to see if all transport wants passports.
(If you can get a passport- get one! I really would see this as a last resort!):T0 -
I wouldn't even think about trying to leave the country without a passport, not even on the ferries, every one is checked for one, no excedptions.
Border control are really strict nowadays. EU or not.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Well yes, I didn't just mean turn up! I meant to check an see if any airlines / ferries didn't specifically need a passport.
But again- if you can get a passport in time (no matter the cost) I would do that, as you can't guarantee everyone will be OK with it (it is hard to explain in a foreign language etc.):T0 -

Well I know for a fact you do not need a passport to enter the Republic of Ireland- which is a different country!
But I was curious- as I was sure I heard something. It turns out that an EU citizen has to be from a country in the Schengen zone. The UK is not, so you need a passport.
For anyone who is interested Ireland are also not in the Schengen zone (we have a seperate agreement). However, if you are from France, Spain etc, you can enter Portugal without a passport.
Nice to learn something new.:T0
