backup your data to two different places, on a different hard disk, and to dvd's. then factory restore it using Dell datasafe - you don't need the discs to do that, it's on the restore partition, but it's handy to have the correct discs available and/or a macrium backup in case it goes wrong!!

Keep seeing reference to cloud services for my photo backup. I have no idea what they are or the cost if any? Is there a popular no hassle free service out there?

seems that, if what you want to do is help speed up your laptop, then go through the techie forum sticky "HOW TO SPEED UP A SLOW OR INFECTED PC...", should put you on the right path.
You should see a factory restore as a last resort thing, imho.
