Ask your school what their behaviour policy is. Make sure he is rewarded for good behaviour by both the school and yourself, by praise, a cuddle etc. Tell the child exactly what he is doing right, say thank you/well done for doing things you've asked him to do. Make sure you are consistent with him over behaviour at home.

Don't get into the frame of mind of thinking your child is being 'picked on' - it won't do you or him any good.

as a student teacher I can see how much difference having supportive parents makes to a child, and how much damage it causes when the parent tries to convince themselves that their child is in fact a little angel and it's the teacher's fault. i have kids myself too - no child is perfect and you just need to help them through the difficulties they're having. Chances are that with a concerned parent like you, this will just turn out to be a phase and part of growing up.

As someone who has just finished the first year of teacher training, one of the most important things I've learnt is to vary my teaching methods, this ensures that there is a variety of tasks not just listening to the tutor. Aside from the food and bullying etc which are all extremely important to look at, is your son behaving badly because a) the work is too easy, b) bored, c) doesn't understand what's expected of him, d) distracted by others/or environment

I don't know if this will help, but good luck

Sound ike my eldest - he is due to start school in September. Most of his friends started last year, but because his birthday is September he was a year behind and for that I am really pleased. He would have been to young to go last year and had no concentration, but is much better now. He goes to pre school 3 days a week, and they cant believe the change in him ove rthe last year - he was always the disruptive one, and was alway in fights (I used to dread picking him up when I got the teacher stick her head out and ask is she could have a quick word.....) Now he come home with certificates for being polite, or helping tidy up etc.

I think the point I am making is that try all the other things like fish oil, removing E numbers etc but as he is only 5 I wouldnt get to hung up just yet as he is still very young

Update.

Thanks to all who responded. We've now been using the fish oil (eye q) for a couple of weeks along with some more support from mummy and daddy. I have to say the change in him has been amazing - even the teacher commented on Friday that she was very impressed with his change in behaviour and that she had seen a big difference in him. His concentration has improved, he listens more - his whole attitude has changed.

I definitely think the fish oil has played a big part in it - even his writing is neater! It's only two weeks in but fingers crossed he is on the right path now....:-)

Zipvit Omega Juice has been mentioned earlier in the thread. I take it myself, being a somewhat naughty and disruptive person, but I appreciate others don't appreciate the fishy burps. If you do decide to go for this MAKE SURE you keep it in the coldest part of the fridge, don't ever let it warm up, just grab it out the fridge pour up the teaspoon/desserspoonful and bung it straight back in the fridge while it remains cold. That way it won't get too strong.

Another useful strategy is to increase the flaxseed in your diets. It's cheap & easy to buy a big bag of whole brown non organic linseed from your local SUMA wholefood supplier (Where can I buy suma Products?
Suma products are primarily sold at independent health food retailers around the UK. If you would like information on your local stockist please contact customer services by telephone on 01422 313845 or email info@suma.coop ) You then need a coffee grinder or spice grinder to mill a jar ful to keep in the fridge. The whole seeds keep for a couple of years but if you eat those they pass through the system and will be found in the contents of your loo like tomato seeds.
So they need grinding to break the skins. When you've done a jar full keep this in the fridge and add a spoonful to your cereal, another in your yoghurt, smoothie, and use another in your baking casseroles, stews, bread biscuits really anything that uses fat or eggs or flour. It's extremely versatile and extremely good for you.

But don't forget the Vit d3 Hypovitaminosis D in British adults at age 45 y: nationwide cohort ... shows we are all insufficient and this really affects brain stability. . Risk assessment for vitamin D -- Hathcock et al. 85 shows there is, in practice, no danger from this secosteroid, there are a lot of ignorant dangerously misguided individuals who think it's a good idea to increase the cancer death toll by reducing sunlight exposure but those who know there are 30 vitamin d insufficiency cancer deaths for each death caused by excessive sun exposure won't be conned, When people realise that 600 vitamin d insufficient people die from conditions that thrive in vitamin d insufficient bodies for each sunburn induced death they should, like me, get even angrier with these ignorant trouble makers.

• Apoligies if im repeating any advice given on here as i have not read through every reply. I speak from first hand experince here my ds3 whos 7 was diagnosed with dyspraxia last year but has had concentration problem since he was able to walk and talk. September two years ago when he was in reception i researched fish oils at some length as school was reporting disruptive behaviour and no concentration. through this research i found that high doses of omega 3 and 6 can help but that equazen eye q was far superior to any others (i checked the dose) My son disliked the taste as he had to have 3 spoons a day for three months to build the levels then a maintanince dose of one a day. I used to bribe him with a jelly take your medicne you can have a wine gum sort-a- thing!! Well by Christmas school called me in and said that they could'nt believe the change in him he was far calmer and much more able to concentrate so for me i would say you've got nothing to loose by trying him on them i know there expensive but i feel there worth every penny! Hi Sharronloves2spend - thanks for your comments.

Equazen Eye Q is the one I've been using and I'm pretty impressed by it already. I'm currently using 3 spoonfuls for him to build up - another 10 weeks to go! It is expensive at £9.99 a bottle but 3 for 3 in boots at the mo :-)
