It wasn't a complaint, more an observation. I happy earning less and paying less up north.

According to wikipedia the median gross wage in the UK is £21,300. 50% of people are earning less than this, some a lot less.

What is the average house price? £165,000 or something; almost eight times the salary most people are paid if they are lucky.

Sure, no one is priced out of the great property owning democracy we live in.

    come on rugged.
Is the average house resided by only one occupant?
    What's the average household income?

    some interesting points
Before taxes and benefits, the richest fifth of households had an average income of £81,500 in 2010/11, 16 times greater than the poorest fifth, who had an average income of £5,100.
Overall, taxes and benefits lead to income being shared more equally between households. After all taxes and benefits are taken into account, the ratio between the average incomes of the top and the bottom fifth households (£61,400 and £15,200 respectively) is reduced to four-to-one.
Cash benefits and direct taxes have the impact of redistributing income from richer households to those with lower incomes, thereby reducing income inequality. In contrast, indirect taxes such as VAT and duties on fuel and alcohol take a higher proportion of income from lower income households, and therefore increase income inequality.
On average, households in the top two income quintiles paid more in taxes than they received in benefits, while households in the bottom three quintiles received more in benefits than they paid in taxes.
There was a real terms decrease in disposable income between 2009/10 and 2010/11, with the largest fall being for the middle fifth of households.
The proportion of disposable income paid in indirect taxes increased across the income distribution in 2010/11 compared with the previous year. This is largely explained by the increases to the standard rate of VAT in 2010 and 2011.

Is it just me or does anyone else wonder why anyone in the top two income quintiles should be receiving any benefits ? They are paying tax with one hand and being given benefits with the other after the tax payer has employed poeple in the middle to do some maths etc therefore reducing the amount of money available for those that really need it. just seems like madness.

(I do exclude state pension from this.)

Similarly, why are the people in the middle quintile receiving more in benefits than they are paying in taxes?
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I am really surprised at you, of all people, making such a mean post Graham.

Just because Audrey is a little larger doesnt mean she needs to be the butt of jokes on the internet.

If I were in her parlous position I too may reach for a jammie dodger for comfort from time to time.

It's maybe a wording interpretation thing here, just as an example, I currently pay more in council tax than a similar household does in a lower banding.

In terms of that tax, we both get our bins collected.

It may be that part of my council tax is paying for the lower banding tax.

The benefits are the same, it's just cost one household more than the other.

"Benefits" may not mean HB, Child credit etc.

Not sure I'd want to share with 30s.... they'd be annoying. And I bet their version of "quiet" isn't even close to my version.

    30s are p155heads too..

The main problem, when looking for a share, is that most renters don't want to share with older people, so there's less opportunity to even be considered.

When I shared, I couldn't do my own thing as I can't function when others are around.... I hide away in my room, so then stop cooking and doing normal stuff. And I do like to prowl about in the middle of the night in the pitch dark.... and go in/outside.
