I laid new turf just after easter. it is getting long, but i can still pull it away from the ground, it has good roots which have come through with all the rain we have been having, but it has not knitted itself to the ground yet. My neighbours had theirs laid the same time, and they are mowing theirs today, shoudl i leave it a few weeks more to establish itself a little better??

You could cut the grass with shears, as long as they are sharp enough you should not pull at the turf. Same also goes for lawnmower, it is the tearing action that would lift the turf so the sharper the better.

Grass grows from the bottom so regular cutting produces a good turf. I think you should be giving it a light mowing by now. It may be only the edges of the turf that have not 'taken'.

I would also start a regieme of regular liquid feeding with something like Lawn Magic applied with a superspray hose end sprayer.on the end of my hosepipe. I like liquid feeding lawns over pellets as there is no risk of burning the grass if it doesnt rain soon after application. Using the superspray makes it easier to get a good even feed over a large area and cuts down the time needed. have a look at their website https://www.superspray.co.uk you can buy it mail order 5litres. ive just replenished my supply this week.

This should give the roots a boost and send them on their way down into the ground. Once established I only water the lawn when feeding when I think it needs it. If you apply too much water to often the roots stay shallow and are more suseptable to damage in droubt. same with border plants.

Friends has new turf laid - waited/didnt walk on for 5-6 weeks, then adjusted lawnmower for highest cut and was OK - you may still see a few patches of join that you will notice after the mow, but they will 'merge' over time.

On my bottle of 'feed and weed' for lawns it says not to use on new lawns for at least 6 months. Is that if you sew a lawn from seed? We laid turf down just over 2 weeks ago and it is growing very nicely. A few areas just around the edge which have not knitted to the ground yet, but the rest is nice and firmly rooted already. Can I use the weed and feed? And can I mow it, as it has about 3" of nice lush grass on it.

No don't use weed and feed.

Go out and buy something that will just feed your lawn.

I suggest you wait until next year before you use weed and feed particularly if the summer is a hot one. I've managed to kill parts of my lawn by using weed and feed on patches where I laid new turf.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

The feed is no problem, but when can I mow it?
