Last months gas bill is mental

Options
For some reason we can not understand last months gas bill rocketed. We live in a 2 bedroom terraced house, and have a new Worcster Bosch combi boiler, and a 4 ring gas stove, that is it.

Somehow we used 100 meter units (imperial meter) and this equates to 1112kw of gas. I gave a meter reading 3 days ago and again today and we have only done 4 meter units in 3 days.

This has given me a gas bill of aprox £180 for a month! I know it has been cold, and we have had the heating on, but can a modern combi really chew through this amount?

Which is it - imperial or metric? 100 imperial units are 3,300 kWh - 100 metric units are 1,120 kWh.
  • He told me on the phone it was imperial and said it was 100 meter units which was 1112kw l

Have a look on your meter - does it say metres cubed or ft cubed? Your phone call was wrong - there are 11.2 kWh to one metric meter unit or 33 kWh to one imperial meter unit.

As you were charged £180 for 100 units then this is an imperial meter price and about 110 kWh per day.

Trouble is your meter reading today suggests about a third of the usage - 132 kWh over three days.

There is a possibility that you have a metric meter and have been overcharged (though it is far more likely that usage is just down now that it is warmer.) £65 is low for a winter month.

Anyway, look on your physical meter to confirm which type it is - ft3 or m3.
  • Thanks Nada, it has a big FT3 on it so is Imperial.

I am kind of shocked that it has gone up so much in one month, the only thing I can think of is they were incorrectly billing me over the winter and have now done a catch up.

I will need to download all the statements and try to work out what they have been up to, as I relied on the customer services to explain it, but have already had more sense from you :)

    Thanks again

Yes, that is the most likely scenario - the earlier months were estimated and the £180 includes a catch-up.

To state the obvious, March was a lot colder than April, so everyone's April consumption will have fallen markedly.
What tariff are you on? 3,300kWh at 4p per kWh should cost around £132 plus your standing charge.

Good question, macman, as even with Ebico at 5.05p per kWh (inc VAT) 3,300 kWh of gas would only cost £166.65.

... and Ebico are expensive for such large consumers.

I cannot see any reference to Ebico from the OP?

My annual usage for GCH (elec oven) .3 bed house is just under 15000kwh, so that would be an 'average month', with April being just under that figure so looks completely feasible (i do use the britsh gas app so have monthly actuals to compare)..

No, but they tend to be expensive for high users, so I am wondering who the OP is being supplied with that is charging even more. :)
