Tesco screwed me, how can I get money back?

Options
Basically I took out a Tesco credit card due to the 0% interest offer and was using it for all purchases and just keeping the amount to pay if off in a savings account.

I noticed on my account that I could do a money transfer from the credit card to my bank account, but after reading on the their website and terms I wasn't sure whether this would incur a charge, or be part of the 0% deal.

So like a sensible person I rang them up and asked them straight out, if I do a money transfer from my credit card will it be at 0% interest? I was told Yes.

So I proceed and you can see where this is going, next bill date I'm annoyed to see that interest has been charged on the money transfer, so I promptly pay it off in full and send them a letter stating clearly that I had been misinformed by them and demanding them to write off the interest charge.

I get a letter from them telling me to call them. I call them and they have no idea why I needed to call them, and Im told that they have refused the refund. They say they have no record of the call I made! I asked them to send me a letter confirming they have refused it so that I can take it further. They then say there is no way for them to send me a letter!?

Where do I go from here? Can I go to the Financial Ombudsman if they wont send me any confirmation they've rejected my complaint?
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

you call back and ask for a manager, and if that doesn't work, you write them again, giving them a deadline.
  • I would ask to speak to a manager or complaint handler, and if they still refuse to send a response letter to your complaint then go straight to the Ombudsman.

Perhaps it was 0% interest but you were charged a cash-advance fee?

No, they're same as NatWest/RBS cards, no fee for money transfers.

Looks like OP was given incorrect info by the CS rep, as the money transfer would have been liable to interest (at purchase rate, not promo purchase rate) from day one, with no interest free period, even if paid in full.

The no log of a call sounds odd. As this is basic procedure.

You may get some more info on the credit card board.

One thing to be aware of with Tesco CC 0% offer is that they don't warn you when the 0% expires and it normally doesn't tie in with a monthly payment date.

So if you miss the mid month deadline you then get hit with interest from the previous statement date.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Just curious as mine will be expiring sometime soon...would you not be able to work this out from the estimated interest charge on the bill. For example, if they say that you pay by x date, the interest charge will be £Nil, then they can't charge you that month, can they? So as soon as the estimated interest charge shows anything other than £Nil, it's time to pay it off?

Going on the 'estimated interest next statement' figure is a recipe for disaster.

The ONLY sure fire way to find out the EXACT date is to ask them. And the best time to do this is during the activation call when you first take out the card. Then simply write the date down on the credit agreement they send you with the card. Whilst you're writing, note the date and time of the call and who you spoke to.

That said, I'm sure I've seen it posted on here (well, the credit card board) that Tesco now tell you the expiry date on the last 3 statements of the introductory period.
