So basically this GKR karate mob are like the Everest Double Glazing of martial artists then???????
Interesting that 'karate' means 'empty hand' and their rep left the OP with just that...... lol!!!! :rotfl:0 -
I just came across this thread in my travels and am wanting to relay my story. and hope I donlt get flamed as it is not a bad one. I find many forums full of hate for GKR Karate and if my story can help put minds more at peace then I trust you may want to read on.
First I would like to point out I and not an employee of GKR, nor a Sensie but merely a clubmember with a good Karate background expereince.
I had done Karate for about 10 years from age 16 to 26 with various clubs and styles as I moved around a lot in those years. I had been wanting to get back into it for some time and with my son approaching the start age (6) I found GKR representatives at my local Supermarket.
I joined for £30 trial membership/4 months and also enrolled my son. I passed my first grade (started again on grades) within the 4 month period and now have 'life' (gold) membership status (as has my son). The standard memership is £60 now and a few of my club members have paid this figure.
What I have found is the Karate training is good starting quite basic for beginners and getting much more technical as you gain your grades. The main difference from my previous Karate is that the club is aimed at family participation ... no problems there. I have found a larger number of children trainging than I used to see and a much larger proportion of ladies in the clubs.
As a member, I can train at any GKR club I wish to and as I work freelance and irregular hours this suits me very well. I could train 7 days a week if I wanted, but don't think I'd survive very long.
They are the only association I've come across that goes door to door for recuits, but each club I have previously been with has also done leaflet drops and fairs etc to boost membership. This is just a bit more direct. I am not interested in doing door to door recuitment and have not been asked to although the opportunity has been mentioned once.
A few members have had a free trial lesson at my club and often we have prosective members sitting aside and watching. If you are approached by GKR representatives and have an interest then ask for this though the guy on your doorstep is commission based and will likely react accordingly.
GKR currently boast 85,000 karate-ka and there are certainly about 12 clubs within a 5 mile radius of my home. There are rumours abound about fast-track black belts but this is a falacy ... IF I work hard and attend all gradings as directed by my Sensei I have worked out in my goal setting (directed by the club) that I will have my Shodan-ho (black belt in 2020 (5 years).
I hope this post of mine doesn't offend or transgress any forum rules but sometimes a story that doesn't end in tragedy needs airing too.
In short, the Karate is good, how you opt to join the club (or another one) is your choice.0
