Contactless technology might be useful, but it is also a high security risk.
These cards can be read by any device (tablet or phone) fitted with a 'Near Field Communications' (NFC) chip.
You can get all the details except the PIN number & SVC. However, a lot of sites such as Amazon don't need the SVC, so you can go on a spending spree using someone else's card details.
Edit.
Found-out that you can disable this feature by cutting-through the card.
You need to cut a 7mm slot approx. halfway along the top edge. This breaks the loop arial & renders the system inoperative.Never Knowingly Understood.

This is also only relevant for a small number of issuers who have dual contactless chips. A dual contactless chip works via contactless in non-chip and chip and pin countries.
Most UK issuers will only work on EMV enabled contactless readers. This flaw is not present on these cards.0 -
From my experience:
Barclays debit card:
Barclays provide contactless debit cards by default but CAN provide non-contactless if you insist. BUT be warned that you need to go in branch and they will probably deny it is possible until you insist. Also the non-contactless replacement is a basic debit card. They will not provide a non-contactless card for a premiere account (So getting one cost me my free premiere status and thus access to UK call centres :-( ). The non-contactless cards start 4658.
Barclaycard (visa platinum):
Barclaycard provide contactless and thus far I have failed to persuade them to provide a non-contactless one.
Nationwide (visa gold credit card):
Mine is non-contactless but is due for replacement soon. They may have introduced contactless since issue in 2010.
Halifax (mastercard credit card):
I have a non-contactless one issued in 2011:
I don't remember for sure but I THINK I remember that they issued contactless but (as I THINK with all RBS) reissued non-contactless on request.
American Express (BA):
contactless.
Following various links it looks like there are different ways to disable them depending on the card manufacturer.
Barclaycard(platinum) & American Express(BA):
I have just snipped the top of the card in the middle down as far as the magnetic strip and CAN see 2-3 wires have now been cut.
I HOPE that has disabled the contactless... Next time I use them I will check that they still work with chip and pin and with card swipe of the magnetic strip. (so not yet confirmed... NB: magnetic strip swipe is required if you visit the US who have not rolled out chip and pin widely.)
Do NOT damage the obvious chip in your card or it will not work with chip and pin either. (Sorry to state the obvious to Brits, American readers may not be aware of this)
Other links (You'll need to prefix with the usual ht..... - sorry):

Further to my previous post.
On both the barclaycard and the BA AMEX card you can see 4 very thin wires - presumably the arial in the cut between the mag strip and the edge , so presumably going round the edge of the card as pictured in the link on my previous post.
After snipping the wires on the barclaycard, the chip&pin works completely fine just as before.. But interstingly the AMEX worked for a while then became eratic, then only works if you flex the card to push the pin against the contacts hard... New card, repeat - same thing.. It's almost like the BA AMex uses the arial/RFID ANYWAY, or maybe charges something via the arial that is required for chip&pin.. which dosn't really make sense. I'd say it was coincidence (especially as the barclaycard still works just fine - but twice?0 -
they are appearing across the board.
whether this should be welcomed though, i am really unsure. the risk of fraud, or even accidents, has to be increased. on the other hand, i reckon the ability to argue "it wasn't me" when faced with such a problem, has increased too.0 -

Indeed, at the moment, the £20 limit and auto bank liability is reassuring (as is the fact my contactless Amex works literally nowhere), but in time my level of skepticism can be reassessed.
Until then, as an update to my last, my current contactless cards are Barclaycard Freedom, MBNA Plat, MBNA AA (Amex/Visa, Amex so far being useless contactlessly), NatWest current account debit cards, which came up for renewal in June, but since I use debit cards for anything, this hasn't been an issue.0 -

Have to agree with Amex contactless. Only places I've got it to work are McDonalds, M&S and TFL. Boots did also say that Amex contactless would work with them by the end of October.0
