Iron hot plate

Good morning everyone, I have a problem with my iron, I have gone trough 3 brand new irons (argos cheapo ones) they all iron ok for a week or so , but then they develop a kind of burns scum on the surface. I dont heat the iron too hot, and only really use it to iron my uniform dress, the NHS ones. What am I doing wrong, I am not burning clothes when I iron, they seem to iron well, but its when the iron cools , its got a residue that I cant remove, which then makes the iron useless. Is it because I have bought a cheapo carp iron, and should I spend more on a diffeent kind of iron plate.
most other items I iron are cotton and I iron on the correct setting, yet I am stiill ruining the hotplate. any ideas???

Assuming your uniforms are the horrible usual NHS regulation polyester, just hang them up to dry and they don't need ironing.0

You can get iron plate cleaner which works very well. You can buy it from Ebay but I would imagine supermarkets/wilkinsons sell it as well.
Have to say though that if this happens after a week I'd be taking the thing back to Argos and replacing it for a more expensive one as these are quite clearly a waste of money. I'm well known in the family for getting through irons here but even mine last a year.
My current one is Russell Hobbs Streamline which I would not recommend. The cable is too short and the water tank is dark purple - you can't see how much water is in the tank. I usually pay around £20.00

This thread may have some ideas to help:
sole plate of iron (cleaning)
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.
