Metacam for cats

My elderly cat was put on this last week as the arthritis in her back quarters had got worse and she seemed to be in pain. There is some improvement but not a lot. I have since been reading up on metacam and am unsure about continuing with it as she suffers with occasional idiopathic cystitis as well . I was wondering if other MSE contributors had used this with their cats and if so did their cats experience side effects.

Aww, sorry to hear your cat is not well, my cat was only 2, when he broke her back leg, she was put on metacam for a few weeks while it was healing, he was ok, no side effects at all, but was very fit and healthy other than the broken leg.0

I wouldnt be too worried about the side affects. We had our boy on it when he was suffering from urinary tract disease and cystitis and on a small dose they can have it daily for quiet a time although the underlying issue will never get better so you need to think quality of life. Best of luck for poorly kitty.Ant. :cool:0

Sorry to hear puss isn't well.
One of my boys is currently on metacam as he stood on some broken glass last week, his brother was on metacam when he burned his paw (yes, they're not the smartest of brothers!). Not experienced any side effects with either and it seems to help a lot with their pain. I wouldn't worry too much about the side effects unless she starts experiencing any, most are just listed to cover the backs of the production company.
If she still seems to be in pain though, it'd be worthwhile speaking to the vets as they may be able to offer something a little stronger to ease her pain.
Hope she feels better soon.0 -
Thank you all for your input very much appreciated. She is a young 22 and quite remarkable. Still interested in things and eats well. It was sad to see her in discomfort last week, really feel the metacam has helped a bit and we have decided to keep her on it for now. Currently she is sprawled out on the sofa waiting for me to lift her down and get supper!0

My dog was on Metacam for 10 years with no effect. The vet used to do periodic blood tests , as it can affect the liver and kidneys (I Think) over prolonged use.
My, she is an old girl ! I have just got a 1 year old firecracker of a cat, who thinks she is a Ninja and loves to creep up on me and dive on my head whilst I am asleep ! Don't tell me I could have 22 years of it? lol Only joking, she is a sweety apart from the divebombing and periodic farts in the face ! lol0 -
its easy to say that a drug like this has minimal side effects to animal, but in reality some drugs do effect some animal more than others, personally i would be concerned that a animal suffer with a known side effect of a drug without taking the drug and consult my vetnary nurse and highlight my concern, it maybe an overreaction to some, but i would want to get confirmation and peace of mind that this drug isnt going to cause a complication thats an asside from what the drugs intended purpose was for.0

My cat was on Metacam for a week recently, and also suffers from idiopathic cystitis. I had read about some of the side effects and was a little worried so kept a close eye on him but he was fine (although about three weeks later he did have a major bout of cystitis).0
