Hi I was after some help. I have just been on the Internet on my laptop checking my emails when it just froze and I couldn't do anything crtl alt delete didn't even work. So I waited for around another 2-3 minutes and then the screen started to flicker, this happened around 10 times it would flicker and stop after a few seconds. Then the screen just filled with horizontal coloured lines flickering like a tv channel sort of does just before it tunes in properly. I sat and waited a few seconds then decided it was time to hold the power button down to shut down. I then tried to boot it back up but nothing comes on the screen at all it doesn't even light up. Any help would be great
Thanks all

Most laptops have the video hardware integrated on the motherboard so it's not economical to repair. It does sound like your video had gone Boom if not Bastic!
Time to get a new lappy I think

Make and model would help.
Is is still booting up but without screen display (can you hear the fan etc)?
If so, plug it into an external monitor to test the graphics output. If it works, it's not the graphics chip, but the inverter or display. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi macman,
the laptop is an Acer Aspire AS5742.
Yes the blue light comes on and you can hear the fan whirring.
I will plug it into my PC monitor tonight and check. I didnt even know you could plug them into a normal monitor.
Many thanks0 -
First bit of trouble shooting.
1: Remove battery and try to power on to clear any remaining charge, then replace battery and turn on. If it still doesn't work..
2: Plug in external monitor via VGA or HDMI and see if that works.
If you get to 2 and it still doesn't work then it is likely a hardware issue and probably beyond economical repair I am afraid unless you have some kind of extended warranty. If it does work then it is likely the screen or inverter as macman says.
Screens can be replaced and they are not usually too expensive, £40-£70. It should take you more than an hour to do but it is wise to take the broken screen out first to check the part number on the back before ordering another as the same model doesn't always use the same screen.0 -
Hi OGR
I tried what you said and it did boot up on my monitor to the start in safe mode page / start windows normally page.
I selected safe mode and the screen flickered flashed a few different colours then stopped on a permanent yellow filling the full screen and that was it it just stayed like that until i held the power button down to shut it down?
I'm guessing its gooshed completely but I'm open to any more advise if possible.
i have photo's and even a video from my phone when i carried out the above task but i have no idea how to load pictures or videos up.
Thanks for assistance thus far.0 -
Hi, how old is the laptop?
do you still have proof of purchase ?
there have been a lot of laptops failed due to the 'nvidia defect' and linked to that non nvidia gpu's can be affected due to a change of solder rules that had lead removed , this can cause failure in the grid that the gpu sits in.
You should google nvidia defect for help and advice just incase the problem is this.
Under the SOGA you have up to 6 years to claim.
There is a certain web site / forum that has lots of info on this ........... Am I allowed to post the name / url ?
any more help then please ask

Hi Ralphy
I do have proof of purchase and its just over 2 years old. I found a very interesting site with a wealth of info regarding the nvidia so thank you so much. But unfortunately i bought my laptop from Comet which has since gone bust so not sure where to turn regarding claiming from the retailer at the SOGA within the 6 year claim period.0 -
