Timing for switching from Go Fix 11 tariff without incurring cancellation fee

I've been on nPower's Go Fix 11 tariff for a couple of years. This comes to an end on May 21st and I get put on their Standard Tariff if I do nothing which is very pricey. I plan to move to their Energy Online Aug 14 tariff but should I wait until May 21st to do this or start the process now?

Sticking point being there is a £40 cancellation fee for leaving the Go Fix 11 tariff early. Needless to say their literature doesn't make this clear - all I am getting are emails and letters saying I need to switch. The suspicious nature of me wonders if this is a way of them conning me out of a further £40 by my switching too soon.

You can contact them anytime and ask to go on their Energy Online Aug 14 tariff rather than their standard tariff with effect from the end of your current deal.

Have you checked the comparison sites to ensure this is the best deal for you?
  • You should phone them and arrange for the switch to take place on the day your current deal ends 21st May. That guarantees you the deal in case it is removed.
If they have a large backlog in place this may actually be delayed.
Thus book it and then call up on May 20th and get the switch done then. That ensure you will be switched and only pay 1 day at the new higher cost.
NB They will let you switch now without penalty but as it is more expensive that is not the best
The fixed price Dec 14 is the deal I have selected.

I have just signed up to move to Npower from OVO just due to the unit price increase. I initially thought about the August 14 10.868p but this is not fixed, there is a fixed option of 12.000p until June 2014 or the 12.002p fixed until Dec 2014 which is the option I have signed up for. I take a meter reading every month and have done this for the last 5 years and use 21000 units in an electric only 300yr old cold house!

Were you not on a fixed rate tariff with Ovo, rather than their expensive varible rate tariff?

Are you sure you use 21,000 kWh of electricity per year?
If you do, are you not on E7?
