We have about 100 NSS's and in a position to redeem them. They are all inherited and from the mid 1970's.
We called the 0500 helpline only to be told they need to be posted to a Glasgow address.
I am a little worried about this because of the total value (each cert is £200, some £500).
What would be the best way to insure these certs for delivery? Is there any other way to do this as it is a lot of money for us to lose.
Can i have them certified and appraised at the post office in some way before posting? How best can i prove the loss if it should happen?
Regards.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0

Post Office details here http://www.postoffice.co.uk/special-delivery-guaranteed but if you are sending in one package you might have to explore insured special delivery with a courier service?
And it looks as though you will need several of these?http://www.nsandi.com/files/asset/pdf/savings-certs-cash-in.pdf
Might be cheaper to travel to Glasgow!0 -
How much to send insured £30k even if done in 3 special delivery packages? I can't find the insurance prices on the RM website.
Glasgow will be £150 return from here...0 -

It looks as though this page might help. Although it looks as if it covers upto £10.000
I think in this case it might be easier to go to the Post Office and ask at the counter.0 -

No special offers? Treat yourself to a minibreak?
Otherwise ask at the Post Office?
Try a courier? - example http://www.arrowlighthaulage.co.uk/typesofcourierservices/high-value-goods-courier/0 -
Hmmm ... I 'm thinking the same. Another issue consequential loss. Does this mean their current value is protected?
I have read a horror story regarding an SD user reported having compensation claim turned down because the packaging was discarded by the recipient, can someone confirm or deny this? There is no reference to this caveat I can see from their website?

I don't really think you would lose the money for ever if the worst happened and the certificates went astray. You could make photocopies of each one before posting and that would provide pretty much cast iron proof that you possessed them. (I presume there's no dispute you are the rightful owner?)0
