How long can debit take before it is void

I ordered online , paid with Visa debit card and received goods in October last year. Forgot all about it, only get 6 monthly bank statements. Today, the debit for the goods shows as being taken lasw week, 6 months later. Shop use Cashflow who blame a coding error by Visa. Shop has been paid by Cashflow but I have had no word from any of them and all blame each other. I have been told that I do not have to pay for goods if I have had them with no communication and the vendors knowledge for 6 months. Anyone know where I stand on this? My bank was shocked and I have been told to try the charge-back route. Also, how did the dbit go through last week if I haven't been asked for the security code? Anyone know the way to go on this ?

You did pay for them when you did the transaction. it was just that the transaction took some time coming through. Also, how did the dbit go through last week if I haven't been asked for the security code?
Not all transactions require the security code. Plus, you would have given your details at point of sale.Anyone know where I stand on this?
You had a debt and that debt has now been paid. Job done. Slower than normal but no more than that.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). You bought goods and agreed to pay for them. The transaction was complete at that point. If for some reason the payment does not go through, the merchant has six years to recover the debt. It is much the same situation as when a cheque bounces after you have purchased goods - you still owe the money.
I am surprised that your bank advised you to request a chargeback as you authorised the charge and received the goods, albeit that there has been some delay processing the charge. However, even if you do successfully obtain a chargeback, that does not change the fact that you are still legally obliged to make payment for the goods, and the merchant can pursue you for the money - through the courts if necessary.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

They can chase you for 6 years for debt (more if they then go to court), after 6 months its good practise for them to inform you that they are taking payment but they are under no obligation to do so.0

Thankfully they didn't take the payment twice in October . . . it would have taken you 6 months to notice :cool:0
