I just don't understand, given our physical proximity to the Eurozone, not to mention our (at present) membership of the EU, why our banks don't offer Euro accounts.

    Lloyds do:http://www.lloydstsb-offshore.com/offshore-savings/

    Barclays do: http://www.barclayswealth.com/international/savings/savings-in-choice-currencies.htm.

    HSBC do.

An awful lot of people must be in the situation(s) described above and surely it would be more beneficial to banks for this money to be lodged in low interest accounts with them until next year rather than simply stuffed in a drawer somewhere or (worse) providing enormous profits to TravelEx or whoever in Arrivals Halls.

I'd be stunned if many people were in the situation above. If we go on holiday then we might have 50 or 100 Euros left which we then keep for the next time. To have 7000 Euros cash LEFT OVER just seems unbelievable. I wouldn't have that amount of cash in the house in sterling or any other currency as it would be put straight into the bank.

Back to the OP's question, if you have that in cash then purely for security reasons I'd change it and pay into a bank. You will also a get a small amount of interest on it.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
