Removal Firms - tips

Options
Hello,
We are in the process of organising our belongings in order to move houses (hopefully we will be exchanged and completed within the next month).

We are now at the stage of obtaining quotes from local removal companies to quote us in moving from our current 2 bedroom terraced house to a 3 bed semi detached house which is 12 miles away.
Basic (big items) which will be moved:

Sofa (2 seat & 3 seat), Fridge/freezer, Washing Machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, garden pots, wardrobe x1, chest of drawers x2, king size bed (flat packed) & mattress x1, baby cot x1, table & (4) chairs x1, TV unit x1, dresser x 1.

Are there any tips from people who have obtained quotes from removal firms that we could use to help keep costs to a reasonable level.

We know that moving on a Friday/Saturday are the most expensive days, we are going to pack ourselves (using boxes from supermarkets, or from self-storage companies), we have de-cluttered the house so there is less to move, I have also checked out our contents insurance and for an extra £20 our belongings are covered for any damage (inc. accidental).

Could I offer my services to the removal company as a labourer for the day? I know it would be ultimately cheaper to do it ourselves with a hand from some friends but we want to use a removal firm.

Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks
SJ

we just did it ourselves with a van. its surprising how long it took. it took 3 of us over 8 hours...but everything was moved in good time and not one thing broke!

we got quotes from £350 to £700 and from £50 ph to £75 ph. in the end I paid £200 for a standard size house move.

my top tip is if something can be dismantled then do it especially when stairs are involved. the washing machine will be the heaviest. if you have a trolley jack, use it. be patient and everything will be moved in time. you dont sound like you have alot to shift and if you hire a van for £75 for a day, and get together 2 other people you will be fine and save money.
