We had one, and found out we were entitled to more than what we were getting.

I had one last month. She produced a form from the IR saying that I`d got £300 in interest on my building soc account for tax year 2003/4. Which meant that over 3 years ago I must have had savings, so what have I done with it?. I explained that I sold my flat in June, used the money as a deposit on this house in Dec and the interest was for those 6 months. I`ve heard nothing since, but I did have to provide all bank statements etc.

Please don't worry about the visit. They are random checks, and a universal anti-fraud deterrent rather than one targeted at you specifically.

Personally, I’m grateful that these checks are carried out. The council pay benefits from public money and so are entitled to carry out checks to ensure they are going to the right people. In fact, they have a duty to make sure they have adequate controls in place to try to ensure this public money is spent appropriately. This is just one of those controls.

The verification officers are experienced people who can tell a lot more from a quick home visit, than from any amount of paperwork.

It’s not Big Brother, so don’t feel intimidated. I know it’s a bit of an inconvenience, but overall they really are on your side, as you don't want the limited pool of benefit money going to fraudsters.

(By the way – I’m not affiliated with any council office!!)

Its routine nowadays for these checks. Are you claiming as a single person-do you have a boyfriend? Do you have someone staying with you ATM? You seem quite upset about this visit. If you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about.

The visit took about 10 minutes. The official was polite and friendly.I was very pleased that he turned up,as I had to negotiate with my employer so I could be at home.I felt like I was a fighter for civilisation itself, for the day, doing my bit for the anti fraud department.Even though I was a conscript,I still felt honour and pride as I responded to my call of duty.
As I said before I haven't got anything to hide.I think it is very rude of penny pincher to suggest otherwise.Maybe you were Gestapo in a previous life? Maybe you should get a job micro chipping the population? Just think how routine that could be.

Glad to hear the visit went pleasantly.

I must confess, I would welcome a visit by council, DWP,CSA and Tax Credits. I would lull them all into a false sense of security by offering round the fondant fancies, then hastily pull the trap door. Release terms only upon satisfaction of them all getting their darned paperwork up to date and matching up between governmental departments... a bit like that little old granny holding hostage all the Carlsberg lorry drivers!
