off the wall ideas to find jobs?

some daft ideas my friends have seen / come up with..

billboard ad?
eyecatching, but expensive (if on JSA!). is there a business type justgiving site,
so i could crowd surf(?), for donations towards the cost?

guerilla marketing -
blu-tacking posters on the back of buses, taxi's etc,.. littering fines?

or leaflets in public areas at conferences, seminars etc? getting access maybe tricky.

youtube cv? what to say? what to wear?
- any theme? serious / comic / scandal??
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)

    What industry or area?

The reason most of those haven't been used much, is because the normal routes have proven to work better over time. However, if you tell us what area, there may he someone with an insight into it with ideas you haven't thought of.
  • Creative ideas for job seeking tend to work best in the creative industries (e.g. running a marketing campaign/billboard etc for a marketing job).

Or at least that seems to be the case for the vast majority of the success stories in the media.

Surely there are specific websites for jobs in specific areas? It's all about hours of browsing on the web.

Not according to the job center! I spend ages browsing the web looking, not just the main sites as everyone uses those but finding individual companies that advertise on their website but not on the main job search sites. I write all this down for the Job center but it is not counted as an 'action' to look for work, the only web searching they count is looking at their UJM web site. The things they do count as actions are telephoning and writing to companies which is fine I do this as well but generally these companies are not looking to employ and must get loads of these on spec letters I bet they all go in the bin!

How about turning up at a company say you have come for the job interview, when they say "what interview", tell them the one for the job they will give you when they realise how brilliant / committed you are. Not tried this myself but if anyone has please post how you got on!

    Crowdsource http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowdsourcing
  • I don't know how true this is, but I heard the following story about a young Kenny Everett:

In the days before his first meeting with the BBC (might have been an interview), he would walk into Television Centre in a white coat with a can of film under his arm and ask the receptionist to page Mr. Kenny Everett over the tannoy.

After a few days of this, he went for his interview. The interviewer said to him "Kenny Everett? I've heard of you!"

That's insane! Of course those methods are actions to looking for work. It's probably those individual websites/companies that will result in you getting a job rather than using those obvious routes that thousands of people use.
I remember noting down very specific sites and companies but wasn't questioned or told it didn't count.

I did the same with regards to noting individual companies websites checking the recruitment section and nothing was said, its how I found my current job (definitely wasn't posted on the UJM site), ok its not the best job but im working and arning a wage.

    How would the person get

    1> into the building?
    2> past reception or security?

With no named person and no appointment

That will never work for big companies in London or ones that will just tell you to get out!

Or they are really going to magic a job out of the magic hat they have LOL

The clue was in the question "off the wall ideas" not likely to work no of course not but neither is walking around wearing a bill board!

I don't live in London none of the companies around here have security on the door, you just walk in and speak to the receptionist, alot of them don't even have a receptionist you wait in the entrance way until someone walks past who asks how they can help. (I am assuming this is anyone can be from the cleaner to the managing director).
