I've test ridden very powerful sportsbikes in the past without any need to agree an excess.
For all they knew, I could be jumping straight on their 1000cc Honda having only ever ridden a 125

Businesses just have to take the excess on the chin should it ever come to it IMO
  • I think most dealers will have very high excess on their loan cars but they don't like telling you about it. Why can't they offer an excess insurance, I would pay £5 - £10 a day to protect myself against a £500 excess charge should even a small knock happen.

there is ususally an excess but most dealers will not mention that to you. This one seems to be the exception.

I would do that do. I ended up paying £600 excess on a hire car, I could have saved that if I paid the £35 for full damage waiver.

Perhaps they work on the basis of a largish excess may make the driver take more care with the car and reduce the risk of a claim that puts their already expensive garage insurance up

Well, we went to another Hyundai dealer who we asked specifically about excess and were told that there isn't one. We didn't sign anything either -- just left a licence. We didn't like the car enough anyway so we are still looking

Could be worse pretty sure the local BMW garage was more like £1000 excess when we were test driving different cars last time round.

As already mentioned most garages have these high excess they just tend not to tell you and get you to sign the paperwork, at least it was brought to your attention so you had the chance to take extra care.

As for license always been asked for both parts of license as I would expect to be honest.

I worked for a dealer group that had a £10,000 excess on the vehicles!! , I kid you not. However instead of telling the customer that they would have to pay it (can you imagine that conversation?) the dealer would stump up for any mishaps. Luckily, other than a couple of sales staff having accidents we never had an incident with a customer to worry about.
