canon mv880x tape error

I have the above camcorder. It will not load tapes. The tape holder won't close either automatically or manually (they are the right tapes and the right way round). When there is no tape in, it closes automatically fine!
Any bright ideas before I resort to chucking it in the bin. I have loads of tapes that I want to put onto DVD.
