Gas/Elec Average Usage Query
Options
So I am guessing you guys see questions like the one below around 400 times a day but I'm not really sure of the best way of searching for the answer.
So at the moment I am trying to work out whether my average consumption of electricity and gas is excessive.
These figures are for a three bedroom mid terrace house with reasonable loft insulation/boarding/cavity wall insulation. All double glazed window (Rear are new, Front are over 10 years old) with all new heating components except boiler (I'll come to that in a bit)
So I've had my bill from EDF stating:
From July 2012 - April 2013
Gas per day: 69.08 kWh
Electric per day: 7.13 kWh
Problem is my bills from previous suppliers all do this measurement differently. I am trying to convert previous numbers etc into a similar format but was wondering are the figures I have vaguely typical for the sort of house above (I know this is a very difficult question to answer without a lot more info but what I am concerned about is my gas usage is excessive)
Reason I am bothered is I know my boiler to be a bag of nails. It takes a good hour or so to heat up the house fully and water is rarely very hot. I'm looking at getting it replaced shortly but this stuff costs money as you know!
Anyway, Wotcha think? I'm sorry for the rambling message, I must be honest I find the way gas/electric is measured deliberately confusing. Very annoying for someone who just wants to quickly check they ain't being diddled!

We may not be comparing like for like but your gas seems high - I have a modern 3 bed end terrace, 4 people inc 2 teenagers leaving stuff on, TV and laptop each etc
Daily use over last year - Elec 15Kwh, Gas 32Kwh, and my house is usually flipping roasting!
BTW - depending on your meter type/age, the initial units it measures in may be different, but your supplier should always convert this to their billing unit ie Kwh0 -
Over the same period my average daily figures are 9kWh on electricity and 48kWh gas. My boiler is about 13 years old so, not the most efficient. Mine is a 3 bed semi with an integral garage, which I believe is a big factor in why my gas usage being higher than it might be. With this in mind, I think your usage looks high. Have you thought of getting a gas safe engineer to have a look at your boiler?
Also, if you are on "certain" benefits, you may be eligible to get your boiler repaired/replaced, under the Energy Company Obligation.0 -
Modern 2 bedroom house with 3 adults:
Electricity: 10 kWh/day
Gas: 20 kWh/day0 -
Cheers all for the replies. Looks like I have a serious issue with the boiler then. Same time a couple of years back I was at around 42 kWh now this period I am at 69 kWh.
Took me a good couple of hours to work out the kWh for similar periods of time however. Why do these companies have to bill for energy in so many different ways? Makes it a bloody pain to calculate with any certainty ...
Either way, Boiler seems to take an age to warm stuff up (Water and heating) Will try re-balancing I think and then will have to look at getting it swapped out. Not been very reliable since it was asked to do some real work a few years back
Is it a 20 deg. difference between flow and return valves can anyone remember? I've slept since ...
Thanks again!0 -
Ignore daily averages. Your annual electricity consumption is about 50% below average, your gas about 50% above average. However since the figures omit the summer 3 months and are pro-rata'd up from a 9m billing period, the gas in particular may be over-estimated.
Why not get your actual annual kWh usage and use that as the basis for comparison?
This will do the gas conversions for you in seconds, no need to spend hours on it:
