950L Tax Code?

Can anyone tell me why someone would be on a 950L tax code rather than the standard 944L?

Boyfriend has just had his first pay slip of the new tax year and seems to be on a tax code of 950L but we have no idea why. And yes I know it means he's effectively paying (slightly) less tax but we've had problems in the past with his tax code so want to make sure it's correct.

Is it because he washes his uniform. My Husband is paid weekly and washes uniform. However, his employer hasn't changed their codes yet for some reason, but when they do he will be 948L

Ohhhh thanks for that! He used to wash his uniform but his work changed it a while ago now to own clothes. To get it altered would he have to speak to his employer (as they obviously know he no longer qualifies) or does he have to go through the rigmarole that is HMRC?

Employer has nothing to do with his tax code. He will need to get in touch with HMRC.
  • The unions struck a deal with the government that if you wear a uniform with a company logo, you are entitled to an extra £60 for the expense of washing your uniform. That accounts for the 950L, instead of 944L.

You are also allowed to claim the tax back for the last 6 years.
If you do claim 6 years worth of tax back, I believe you will get 4 years at £60 and 2 years at £45 which is the old allowance. So anyone reading this should phone the tax man, and get the £300 in your pocket and not theirs!

You can only go back 4 years.

You will not get back £300. What you will get back is the tax relief on the allowance, in this case 4 times £60 so £240. Basic rate tax relief on that is £48. Higher rate would be £96.
  • I had my tax code adjusted last year to compensate for 6 years.

That would be in order. For those outside self assessment this was reduced to four for claims made after April 2012.
