Assuming the website you used is accurate, that's saving you £3 a day in fuel, or £15 a week, or nearly £700 a year.
Not that this makes a big difference, but the OP's husband drives to work six days a week, so it's actually more like £3*6*48=£864 per year. Not that that changes the rest of your argument!
The real saving will be likely be larger, depending on the non-commuting mileage that the car does. But this is assuming a reliable replacement can be bought that does something like 55 mpg.0 -
The 306 is currently returning only 35 MPG if paying a typical 137p per litre, which is much less than it should be.
I was thinking it's a diesel, so more like 36 mpg? But that depends how accurate the £9 per day is, and if there is any other mileage than the 50 mile round-trip commute included...
Repairing the 306 to get it back up to 50 mpg might make most financial sense, if this is doable.0 -
The car is only used for work, my car is used for any other runs.
Thank you for your advice, I will stop getting on at DH.
We would be better saving the money for when the car eventually dies.0 -

Is your car more economical? I'm sure there are a whole range of reasons not to, including what mileage you do in your car, but from a purely financial point of view it might make sense to swap cars... Just a thought!0 -

Yep my car is much more economical, but I use it for driving the kiddiewinks around etc, so DH says he would prefer us to have the more reliable car. I had suggested that.
My other thought was for him to have my car, and I get a petrol runabout, but I suppose the issues are the same with petrol and diesel.0
