Life insurance, critical illness cover and build and contents ins. Help for FTB!

Options
Apologies for the long winded title, but I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment.

My wife and I will be purchasing our first home shortly and need to take out life cover, along with critical illness cover. I know we should have done this already seeing as we have 3 children, but better late than never.

The problem is, I'm not sure what the norm is for quoting purposes and if there are particular things that I would NEED to have in place e.g. pay out if you don't die or become critically ill. They ask how long the policy should last for etc, what's the norm here? I'm 32 my wife is 26. They also mention decreasing mortgage etc, all a bit confusing really.

Secondly, we've had a great quote for building and contents insurance, something like £186 for the year with great extras that a lot of other companies aren't offering. The company are called:Liverpool victoria. The excess is £250 and the buildings cover is £250,000 and contents £20,000

If anyone can tell me what things they put down, although I realise this is an individual thing, but it could still help, and also what they pay monthly for both covers mentioned above, I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks.
