As a student, where to put as residence and what to put as income?

Hi, I've had a look for the solutions to these but can't seem to find much, am hoping someone can give me a clear answer, though I'm happy to just contact banks if that's what's necessary.

I'm looking into getting a credit card, however obviously most ask for income and address. I have rented the same student house for 2.5 years now, however am not on the electoral role here (I was in student accommodation nearby but am guessing that doesn't help). Should I enter this as my address, thereby being able to put that I rent, or do I need to put my 'home' address and 'living with parents'?

With regards to income, I believe student loans/grants don't count (as you have to pay back the loan) however I have earnt a reasonable amount of money during holidays in salaried jobs. Although I am not in them now, this is all money I have received within the past year, can I include this?

I also have a guaranteed job starting in September but guess I can't put the salary for that as I am not yet in it?

Thanks for any advice!

  • You should contact the bank you are applying with.

If you have a student account with one of the banks they may give you a student credit card, but with the details that you have given above, it is unlikely that you would be eligible for any other CC.

Income is current income, so you cannot include previous income if you are no longer working in that post. If you have a part-time job whilst doing your course, you can put your income from that.

I'ts much better to have only one current address reported to the CRAs, but it's probably too late now. Anyway, I'd use the one that you are registered with at the electoral roll.

Grants don't have to be paid back, do they?

You should put your address as the address you wish correspondence to be sent to. Also the address you wish the credit card to be sent to.

Most credit applications will also ask for other addresses you have lived at within the last 3 years.

You should disclose your current income, not what you have earned in the past or what may earn in the future.
And you are correct, a loan is definitely not an income ;)
However a student grant may be classed as a form of income I believe. At least that's what I declared as my income when I applied for my first credit card. :)

Presumably you are on the electoral roll at your parent's house; if so I would use that one.

But try the bank you have your student a/c with

Thanks for all the advice guys. Guess I should contact individual banks to check about whether to include grant or not.

On a side note, are there any 'travel' credit cards I'm likely to even have a chance of getting? I've had an account in fairly constant use with Halifax for years but it's not my student account and the clarity card seems to be quite picky?

I should only have my home address listed with CRAs, the only thing I've done outside this was be automatically registered to vote by my uni when in halls of residence. Unless this would count as another address?
