Win98 & 98SE Help wanted plse

I was trying to help my daughter on her computer (Win98) over the weekend, and because I have not used Win 98 for so long I cannot remember how to drive it. So, a couple of Q's.

Am I right in thinking that you cannot have USB ports with Win98?

And, how can I find out if she has Win 98 or 98SE? - the logos are the same I think.

All help appreciated.

JohnF, you can run USB peripherals on w98 but you may have to install the 98 driver for it before you plug it in (xp has the drivers already there for a lot of stuff). The version & licensing info should be in the 'system' part of the control panel.

    hope this helps :D

Thanks for the information, Bosey. I'm not quite out of the woods yet though. I want to install an external USB modem on my daughter's machine, it's an Etec V92, and the CD that came with it has drivers for Win 98SE, 2000, ME, and XP, not 98 you will note. Any ideas please?

can you not look at control panel-system and see if the version comes up on the system properties box?

Use the Win98SE modem drivers which came with the modem. If support for USB has been installed on the operating system these drivers could/should work. Windows 95 was an absolute joke with USB and it was difficult to get things working, 98 is a little tamer!!

Post back if the 98SE driver doesn't work.

System information can be gathered by right clicking on the MyComputer icon on the desktop and selecting properties. Just click on the relevant tab on the new dialog box which pops up.

Thanks everyone. I won't be seeing my daughter for a few weeks, but armed with all the above information, I might try and talk her through the installation over the phone.

Windows 98 & 98SE are quite different. Windows 98 only supports limited USB devices, due to driver issues. Windows 98SE added better USB support and the ability to use the WDM driver system, where Windows 98 only uses VXD based drivers.
