DVD playback - picture drifting?

My first post so be gentle
I have a DVD recorder, Telewest cable box and television hooked up.
Up until recently, everything's been fine but now if I try to play a DVD, the picture drifts and rolls.
And to make troubleshooting even harder, the problem is sporadic; I watched well over an hour of a film the other night before the problem kicked in. Other times, the problem appears within ten seconds.
I stripped everything out of the equation and just hooked up tv and dvd recorder; the problem was still there. I replaced scart leads; the problem was still there.
I took the dvd recorder upstairs and hooked it up to my portable tv; the problem was still there.
I guess it's safe to assume there's an issue with the dvd recorder?
Anyone got any ideas? Is it a bin job or can it be repaired relatively cheaply?
Or is there something else I might be missing?
TIA for your input

If it's not an interference problem, which you have eliminated by taking out certain variables, then it's probably broken.
You can get DVD recorders cheaply from supermarkets now.
