katetn4, you are not the only one, look at how many people have problems with them only on this forum. I had problems with them too when I was with them.
Now I moved both my gas and electric to Ebico, and they have been a breath of fresh air.

I've had really bad problems with them too katetn4, beginning in October when I wanted to change from a key meter to a standard credit meter, they said I had a huge debt! It turned out it was their fault for not sending out a new key at the price changes. I cried on the phone when I found out. Persistance and a calm attitude have led me to get everything I demanded (eventually). I was assigned a man who I can reach by leaving my phone number on an answering service, he (usually) calls me back within a day and is very helpful. He was the one who told me I was entitled to £20 for every time an engineer does not turn up, even if they phone on the day to say they're not coming. When they eventually applied the compensation to the key meter debt I complained and he agreed that it should be applied to the new account. Oh and it took from October to December to fit a meter (the wrong kind - two rate) and then from December till April to fit the meter we actually wanted. This was also delayed because from the fitting in December we ceased to exist! They could not find us on their systems because OnStream didn't submit the data. It took until this week to write off the debt on the key meter account (got there in the end - six months!) and because of all the compensation (5 missed appointments!) and the work the BG man did to convert my two rate bill back to single rate I just got my bill and am £20 in credit! he is also looking into getting me compensation for my compensation being given later than the specified "within 10 days" - you are supposed to get a further 20 quid if it is longer than 10 days (which it has been for all the missed appointments I suffered).

So all this detail to reassure you that yes British Gas don't know their !!!!!! from their elbows, but SOME of the workers can be a great help and although I have been extremely frustrated by the time it takes to actually get anything done by them, take heart that it will be alright in the end - and if you are anything like me once it's over you'll be wanting to leave British Gas!
Best of luck and please feel free to PM me if you want any advice.

Currenly I'm disputing a huge bill received from British Gas. during my holiday they have charged me an astonishing amount of bill.

    The British Gas sucks.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
