Not meaning to be rude and jump on somebody elses thread, but I have read about many people getting carpets, turfing and 5% gifted deposit thrown in as standard.

We currently rent what was a new build 6/7 years ago, fitted with the carpets the builders put in and they are starting to fray everywhere at the edges and are starting to look a right mess. We might be looking at buying a new build next year and want to stay ahead of this. Would it be realistic to ask for laminate flooring instead of carpets if carpets are offered?

Oh yes, we even have carpet in the bathrooms, so lovely and hygienic...

Hate the carpets I have in my new build that is now 12 years old and have replace what was in the bathroom, hall, playroom and study and DD bedroom! However despite moving her with DS the 4 and DD then 2 the carpet that remains has survived all sorts! Potty training, muddy dogs and frequent cleans with the bissell carpet cleaner! The stair carpet is not thread bear and cleans up very well (it a light green). The only problem is that in the lounge and DS bedroom it has about 1cm gap from the will in places!! It will be replaced at some point now the kids are olders and cleaner!!!

I'm not sure builders would give laminate as easily as carpet, as the installation costs are much higher. No harm in trying though.

A couple of "my" builders did.

It all depends on how flexible they are.

As a negotiator I had a budget. I could tailor the package I offered to suit my purchasers. So I would find out what they wanted most and then that's what I would offer them as part of the deal.

If they wanted laminate instead of carpet then I would just cut back in other areas to pay for it. Just like you would if you were furnishing and decorating your property yourself.

Not all negotiators will be allowed that freedom and not all builders will be so flexible.

    You can but ask......

Going right back to your original question, if the salesperson won't divulge information that she has and you want .
Just tell her straight, give me the information or I walk away, or you can always go through the reservation process and then not reserve.
