It is a surcharge for Saturday Special Delivery by 9am
Post an item on a Friday and we can guarantee next day delivery even though it's a Saturday. Saturday Guarantee costs an additional £3.00 per item at a Post Office. However, please note that whilst Special Delivery stamp prices are exempt from VAT, when purchased with a Saturday guarantee the total price becomes liable to VAT at the standard rate

Also note the part about being liable to vat charges on total cost.

Yes, the total cost is normally 6.22 on weekdays for up to 100g and 10.46 on Saturdays.

    6.22 + 3.00 = 9.22
    VAT is the extra 1.84

For residential addresses I find that Friday SD without the Saturday service being paid for are normally delivered on Saturday despite the guarantee being for Monday.

    Update!
Well I prepaid my parcel online for 500g which was £6.95 and took to a small postoffice who accepted it without issue.

However, my kitchen scales weighed the item at just under 500g, at the PO it weighed in at 518g - I wasn't asked to pay more and my receipt said I'd prepaid the £8.25 even though I'd prepaid £6.95 so not sure what happened there?!

I guess next time I'll just buy at the PO, it's gotta be easier :D

Looks like you got a bargain. You need to test your scales to see if you made a mistake reading the weight or if they are displaying incorrect weights.

I'd be more worried that it gets checked before delivery and buyer has to pay a surcharge

Buyer took delivery according to RM, I'll see if he says anything and refund the difference it that's the case.
