Re-fitting remote thermostat

We have a central heating boiler that we had installed about four years ago. When it was fitted , as well as the controls on the front of the boiler, it had a remote thermostat that you could move into any room to set the temperature.
We have always had a maintenance contract on the boiler and heating system.
While we were living in Spain and the house was tenanted, the boiler stopped working and the service engineer who came said it was this remote thermostat that was wrong and disconnected it. He said that the boiler was not ''communicating' with the thermostat. We do have thermostats on some of the radiators, but otherwise the only controls are now on the front of the boiler.
We would like, if possible, to have the remote thermostat re-connected. We think there may have been nothing wrong with it and it was just an easy way out for the guy to get the boiler working (based on what our tenants told us).
My question is....would I need a gas engineer or an electrician to check this and do the work for us?
We have since changed our Service Contract provider and now have British Gas.
Hope this post is intelligible!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

You could DIY or get an electrician in or a gas fitter who is good on electrics. FWIW, I would guess that the original problem was the battery on the remote. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0

Thanks so much for that advice. My husband is good at diy,(and even I can change a battery!) but the person who disconnected it cut wires out. Would this make it a specialist job?(AKA HRH_MUngo)
