Upvc windows, self fit or company?

Just about to get a 2 bed maisonette ex-local authoritys over 2 floors. Theres a ground floor flat beneath. Windows need replacing ASAP so any ideas on self fit vs company? Like the idea of coming home to find it all done but dont like the idea of a smarmy saleman winding me up

also would I need to contact anyone asking permission as its a leasehold property
cheers glen

I would ask a friends and family for anyone they can recommend. Try and go for a local firm where possible.

I would defo get them fitted by a company cos if you fit them yourself you will need to getting building regs approval as you are not FENSA registered. which will cost you about £100 i think for the building regs. If you do go with a company make sure they are FENSA reistered or else you will still have to pay for building regs. also if you are on first floor then its not going to be easy on your own without the relevant eperience i dont think.

Regarding permission i would contact the council (if they own the freehold) and ask them there permission i wouldnt think they would mind at all but get it in writing just to be on the safe side.
  • I would consider whether the £100 inspection charge actually may be a good deal cheaper than calling in any FENSA cowboys. I will almost certainly go the DIY route if and when I switch to UPVC. Total cost will be my main consideration with my own DIY labour costed at no charge for the purpose of the cost comparison. So it boils down to whether we can purchase upvc units as close to the manufacturer source as possible, markedy chaper than the FENSA cowboys can. It is outrageous that the Government handed FENSA this near-monopoly to the detriment and cost of DIYers.
