Help with game info on external hard drive

I like to play the Sims 3. My old laptop died and I now have a new one.
I have the old hard drive in an external plug in case. Can I just plug it into my new laptop, put the Sims disc in and play using the info stored on the external hard drive?

The old pc ran on Windows 7 and this one is 8, if it makes a difference.

  • Not likely - all though the saves are probably stored somewhere on the external hard drive, you'd have to copy them from the external hard drive to the saved files location on your new drive (you'd have to install Sims 3 from your CD on windows 8 first)

    At a guess (I don't have Sims 3):-
    1. install Sims 3 on the new laptop (allow it to install on the C: drive as usual - so it doesn't touch the external drive)
    2. copy files FROM
    <external drive letter>:\Users\"Username"\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\*.* TO
    c:\Users\"Username"\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\

if you just install game on new pc and then see if it has an import saved data function in the game them point it to the external disc to import the saved games/preferences.
You could also try finding the saved game folder and just copying the folder into the sims3 folder on new pc see if it works then.
If it causes and probs then just uninstall game and reinstall again.

Ive just got the disc to try and realise its Sims 2 not 3. I suppose this doesn't make a difference.
